I like this book. It is organized first by type(dresses, tops, coats, skirts etc) then each article of clothing has four sections along with a picture. What is looks like, who made it, who made it hot, and how to rock it. The history on the clothing is mostly accurate(She did get who created the little black dress wrong-Hint: It's not Coco Chanel). "The how to rock it" is a little...debatable. She recommends cutting some fabric off a prairie dress with scissors to update it and wearing it with something "unexpected, like fishnets or a studded hoodie." Or wearing a baby-doll dress with combat boots to toughen it up. But I'm sure there are some people that will like that kind of look. The good style advice was pretty obvious. "Wear a Cheongsam with up swept hair to show off it's collar"

As a current college student trying to break into the industry I need all the tips and advice I can get. Studied this cover to cover before an interview at Allure Magazine and a week later was called and offered the internship! Couldn't have done it without all the great advice! Must have for a fashionista!

I just bought this book yesterday, mostly based on the reviews I read here. What I find odd are the previous reviews that complain about the author's so-called emphasis on high end brands. More than once Ms. Farr says to use designer brands as research and a reference. e.g the bottom of page 84 to 85.
On page 86 she says. "Paying attention to...the details...means you are better equipped to find...pieces in your price range and size range."

I love this book. I couldn't put it down all evening. It takes a realistic and systematic approach to looking your best. I love how she peppers the book with little tricks like how to determine how short your skirt can be before going over to the tarty side.

I would would recommend this book to anyone who wants to thin out and upgrade their wardrobe. No one book can give you everything you need but "The Pocket Stylist" provides a rock solid foundation. This book will probably become an anchor in my style library.

Fashion books fall into a few categories: designer biographies, coffee table books and encyclopedic guides. The End of Fashion is a stunning exception--a hybrid that shows just how the business of fashion works and fails. I bought this book after seeing Teri as a guest judge on Project Runway, and after hearing Tim Gunn's podcast about how important a journalist she is. He didn't exaggerate. This book breaks through the hype and for once I was able to fully understand, to connect the dots about how the fashion business really works. This book came out a few years ago, but the case studies are so thorough that it seems even more current and relevant than most of the drivel about fashion we always read about. Check it out.

This is fabulous if you want ideas - sleeve, closures, collars....in pieces or the whole, it causes you to think a lot of different ways to get to what you want to do. This doesn't pretend to teach you how to sew or techniques, but just an idea book. For that it's the best.

This book has mostly everything I need. I can't draw male figures to save my life. And in this type of industry, I need to learn a lot more and do a lot more. This book gives me a lil boost up on different figure positions in a fashion design prospect. I recommend it to any level entry who wants to design or get into a fashion illustration field.

I bought what I think is a compiled version of these two books from a local bookstore. It is similar length and has the same title. I have long been searching for a good fashion history book and this one is fabulous. Nearly every page is a large photo of a real antique costume. There is a nice balance of close-up detail photos and full photos, as well as undergarments and accessories. You can really watch the progression of fashion through nearly 300 years. I also like the amount of text that is written; just enough to explain the style progression and the political environment of the time. A picture is worth a thousand words and trying to explain a garment in text is pointless when you can just look at the picture. The only thing I wish was different is that the modern section (from about the 70's on)features primarily avant garde experimental clothing, not the stuff we actually see on red carpets and runways.
